Very true among the GOP but I think Americans --excluding hardcore GOPers -- are smart to say that no one should act self-righteous all the time -- think Newt Gringrich condemning President Clinton while he himself had an affair with a younger woman.
posted about 1 year agoOr is that an oxymoron? Does conservative imply adhering strictly to tradition or can the GOP have a chance to renew itself without sticking to old dogma?
posted about 1 year agoBecause most of those movies were ... terrible?
I don't think Americans forget -- I think that alot of those movies were heavyhanded. Americans do have a taste for war movies (check out Band of Brothers, Full Metal Jacket), etc. I doubt even our soldiers want to watch an Iraq movie, it is NOT a popular fight we are fighting over there.
posted about 1 year agoWhy is conservative radio host, Michael Savage, threatening to post photos and "pertinent information" on employees of Media Matters, a liberal media watchdog group? Why? Because he hates their research on him and his work.
Uh, hello. Public watchdog? Regardless of your stance, this level of intimidation is outright wrong. Media Matters has been reporting that right-wing voices have been ramping up rhetoric that specifically urges violent acts and intimidation. Watch this video of Michael Savage contradicting himself on YouTube.
So now, Savage is talking about a running a web-stalking campaign against them?
posted about 1 year agoHey, maybe someone better will come along. I certainly hope so for the survival of the Republican Party. I'm not a big fan of the Southern-based strategy the GOP has conducted. Give me a New England Republican anytime or even a Liberterian-like one. Government should have nothing to do with what happens in my personal life/bedroom.
posted about 1 year agoDepending. Do the politicians have charm? Ha. I think Sanford was very sincere and apologectic in his press conference. The real problem with him? This man abandoned his post. I think this became much bigger when his own staff had to cover for him. Now there will be a full blown investigation to make sure there were no other ethical lapses he took in office (ala Ensign in Nevada).
Ensign is done for. He paid money for his mistress's 'salary' and for her sons. Question is whether Sanford had other arrangements.
posted about 1 year agoWhy does it take nearly 6 months to process a disability claim within the military? I'd hate to have our soldiers have to pay -- out of pocket -- for treatment while the government's dragging its feet.
posted about 1 year agoSocial Security and Medicare are in terrible shape. Unfortunately, private-sector health and pension plans are doing even worse. Sure, I'm all for personal responsibility and ensuring you're squirreled away as much savings as you can for when you get old -- but when the stock market tanks at 30-40%, your house tanks, etc. it looks like alot of older adults are getting slammed in the twilight of their working years.
posted about 1 year agoIts also worth mentioning that most people don't even know exactly what he won his Nobel for. Sure, he writes an economic/political column for the NYT but that had nothing to do with his research that he won. Krugman won for his innovative theories on international trade from 30 years ago. His political views are unrelated to the things that caused him to win the award.
In the field that he won this award for, economic theories don't really have a 'democrat' school of thought and a 'republican' school.
My own mother is facing that situation right now. The question is alot of retirees are looking to cash out of Social Security because they don't know how much stable the system can be. My mom would rather cash out at age 64 and get a decade of payments before the system breaks, so to say.
posted about 1 year agoI'm not a big fan of company-issued PDAs because I hate being tethered to work after I clock out. Unless, I'm a doctor, bigshot lawyer, etc. my work can stay at the office.
The big abuse issue is when companies set up a culture of not authorizing overtime but give its employees a work load that they can not complete during regular hours... but the company expects its workers to work for free to get the job done. In this case, I think strict rules on OT have to be placed and authorized --
posted about 1 year agoCobra is the federal law that allows employees to continue their insurance coverage after they leave work. Fewer than 1 in 10 eligible workers opted for it in 2007.
The big reason: Cobra is expensive. Now, with people predicting unemployment to hit 10%, more people are going without health insurance more then ever. The average cost of Cobra coverage for a family is $13,000 a year -- big money for someone who is unemployed.
Obama administration boosted Cobra coverage by having the government cover more of the upfront costs. Do you think it's worth it?
