Judging by her record with eBay?
Meg Whitman was brought on board when the company was on the way up, up, up and when she left, eBay was in disarray. Many of her moves like eBay magazine or buying auction house Butterfields (for way too many hundreds of millions) and even worse, Skype, were atypical of her strategic mistakes.
posted about 9 months agoAgree. Isn't that just a sign of good writing that the show strikes that sensitive note with posters? Here and elsewhere. It's EFFECTIVE. I think that the characters who are portrayed as 'sexists' will get what's coming to them in some way or form. Isn't that the thing about Mad Men? It's based in the early 1960s, wait till the late 1960s-1970s hit them with feminism, civil rights, etc.
posted about 10 months agoI think http://digg.com is entertaining and filled with alot of churn -- there's alot of humor but also alot of good back-and-forth debate (aside from the pedo-bear jokes) with people actually linking and citing information. Often times, I find on Facebook alot of my friends don't join the debates because they don't want to rock the boat or offend folks (remember, some of us are linked to coworkers, students, etc). If you want to have serious debate, take it off FB and put it elsewhere.

What used bookstore are you selling at? Not everyone lives in a city with used bookstores and even when I buy a used book off http://half.com, I never get that good of a resale value (and that's IF it attracts a buyer). Let's face it -- if I want to buy the latest bestseller (because I can't wait for the library or its only available in hardcopy), $9.99 is much cheaper then $24.99 that you'd sell at B&N, Borders.
posted about 11 months agoIf Apple debut a touch screen tablet where I could read books, swipe pages with my fingers, etc. I think I could be sold quite easily. Apple has proven themselves to be quite good at user design so if anyone had a chance to mimic a real book experience (with easy ways to annotate your notes on the pages, mark up books, etc), it would be APPLE.
I'd be even more swayed if a Mac Tablet could be used in conjunction with my AT&T account (since I already own an iPhone) or could surf via WiFi.
Rumors already abound about this device from sources like Mashable. Can't wait to see what Steve Jobs would cook up. You know Jeff Bezos is wondering.
posted about 11 months agoHave you seen the Chevy Volt? For once, it's a hybrid car that doesn't look like crap (*cough*Prius*cough). I see a little touch of the Camaro in the design. For $40,000, it better have a NICE interior and not have GM cop out on cheap feeling interior materials. I think this thing looks like Now GM just needs to make sure it doesn't break down all the time. Can we say comeback for GM if this thing works like it's promised to?
posted about 11 months agoIsn't the point when Tyra Banks picks these girls for CoverGirl is that she reminds them that these 'models' serves as role models to young women? I do agree that Queen Latifah, Ellen Degeneres serve as positive influences for women. They could have picked Lindsay Lohan, Kate Moss, etc. and sold ALOT more products but they chose not to. Rihanna, herself, seemed pretty squeaky clean until domestic violence with Chris Brown came out. She is a spokesmodel for young impressionable girls -- I'm glad CoverGirl did not drop her because of that issue.
posted about 11 months agoI drive a Honda Element. I remember those funny, quirky Honda Element ads when they first came out? Remember how weird and square they looked? Good on Honda to just go w/ that --
Favorite Honda commercial: No Pinch by Honda: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unkAvO9v2Nk
Ha ha, love the crab in the ad. I liked how they went the way of comedy to sell the car because really, who hasn't seen the same car commercial formula, over and over again?

As a man, I'd have to say almost all models are skin and bones. CoverGirl or not. Size 0, Size 2 are not sizes found in nature for most Americans. Queen Latifah was a token that CoverGirl gave to the masses -- if America's getting fatter (which it is -- look at this 2009 report), CoverGirl knows that financially, it's a smarter move to cater to that growing population.
1. Percentage of obese or overweight children is at or above 30 percent in 30 states.
2. Adult obesity rates now exceed 25 percent in 31 states and exceed 20 percent in 49 states and Washington, D.C. Two-thirds of American adults are either obese or overweight
CoverGirl needs more cover models who are reflective of the different shapes and sizes that American women come in. posted about 11 months ago
@thegatorbaiter.
Thanks for sharing that link. I was hoping the government would offer more incentives for more creative or easier to implement features (white roofs like what quiet storm mentioned).
posted about 11 months agoIn geek news today, the State of Massachusetts is handing over its massive public transit data for web developers to create some cool apps for your smartphone or for web.
AP story :
Massachusetts is planning to "democratize the data" behind its public transportation network. It's providing software developers with all the coding and background data they will need to develop iPhone applications and other high-tech aids incorporating MBTA subway, bus, train and regional transit information. A restaurant owner, for example, could easily add official government data about the location and details of transit stops or bus schedules into a Web site about his business.
I'm looking forward to seeing all the spin-offs that would come out from that.

posted about 11 months agoI think those who had the money (parents), connections (school), could afford to swing time in Asia to see if they can 'work' out there. It's a small minority but I think the article makes a bigger impact in looking it the other way: China is the one importing AMERICAN workers to work for them. Usually, it's the other way around...makes China seem more like a rising power.
posted about 11 months agoBringing your own grocery bag is a standard way of life for some European and Asian countries. Why shell out the extra 5-10 cents when you can save yourself that?
Most of my plastics go straight into the trash can and I'm sure alot of them end up in landfills where they won't rot for 1000 years. The municipalities saves themselves money for the reduction in landfill usage from cheap plastic bags.
