A matter of months

I think it's only a matter of months, thanks to Admiral Mike Mullen, our nation's top uniformed officer. He's taking a bold stance for allowing gays to serve openly in the military, saying that our current policy forces young men and women to lie about who they are. Are we on the verge of a sea change? I sure hope so.

Britain, Australia and Canada allow openly gay troops to serve, so why can't we? Getting this passed on Capitol Hill will be no small challenge, but it's time to get off our high horse and get rid of this discriminatory ban.
