Mad Men is sexist, but it accurately portrays the culture of the '60s, which was sexist. I don't think this "promotes" sexism. Would it be better to re-write history and have it show empowered women at the office? I don't think so. I agree with technostalgia - show it how it was so we can see how far we have come.
Its sexy seism, I love that show.
It's ridiculous to say that "Mad Men" perpetuates sexism. The show is a probably accurate depiction of, among other things, gender roles in the U.S in the early 1960's. And back then, guess what? Men ruled all and woman were meant to stay home, raise kids and look pretty. If anything, the show's depiction of outdated roles serves to highlight the high degree of sexism at play in those days and forces the viewer to think about ow much less sexist American society is today.
No, it doesn't prepetuate sexism, but it shows just how accepted sexism was in the sixties. It is so interesting to watch this show and see the sexist attitudes that were considered acceptable less than 50 years ago. And I remember this era! I was about the age of Sally, and I wanted to be a boy because I didn't like how girls and women were treated.
Yes there is sexism in this show but whats wrong with that? This show would be a sham if they did not include sexism because it was a part of the culture of that time. This is one of the greatest shows on t.v. today with magnificent actors & talented behind the sceans crew putting the show together. Why are people out there stateing the obvious in a negative way? The actors and creators never denied how jaw dropping the stories are and obvious hot botton/taboo topics they touch on this show. Thats the point of Mad Men, to potray an accurate descritpion of the times without skipping a beat. I have been following this show since its premire and love it! Keep up the great work!!
But I am from the old school and I love that show
if the writers are to stay true historically, which is a big part of the shows appeal, they have to write about how rampant sexism was in the late 50's-60's. and presently how far we've come as a culture to recognize such things in the present.
2010 VS 1965? DUH....
I have to admit I've only seen one episode, but I actually thought it was a great way to remind us how far we've come and how awful things were for women in the past. I think the sexism is so conspicuous and so unsettling to most people that it does more to further the feminist cause than to perpetuate sexism. I think shows that have more subtle sexist themes (the bitchy housewife, the emotional and incapable businesswoman, etc) are far more harmful.
Arguing that Mad Men perpetuates sexism is the same as arguing that it perpetuates alcohol abuse, marital rape, pollution, and infidelity. It's a reflection of the time period in which it is situated. It's certainly more critical of these social problems than perpetuative.
